Just thinking....

Marching in Selma

The Selma March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday, March 4, 2012 was part reenactment of the 1964 protest for voter rights and a 2012 march demonstrating against adding additional barriers to voting. I am a mature white woman raised in the south. I am disturbed about the …

Scott's Writing Assignment Rationalization (no editing allowed)

Rationalization, how I love thee. I wonder if this is an American term. Do we as Americans feel a puritan need to rationalize what we consider indulgences? I come home tired and stressed out and I tell myself I ate a small lunch, this chocolate won’t hurt my diet.

Grandpa's American Dream

My grandpa Ron, told me about a hundred times how with every paycheck he cashed, he and Grandma always put some money in their saving account at the National Trust Bank. According to Grandpa, that money went into the bank even if they had to eat beans for supper every night.

This just bugs me

Has anyone else noticed how often politicians talk about their "reign." When did that start? I always thought the word 'reign'was used only to refer to those that held absolute power over someone or something.

Reed Waddle

I have been following the career of this young man for the last 4 years. The first time I saw him was in a little dive of a place right across from the beach in Destin Florida. I stayed until they played their last set at 2:00 am. I was completely blown away by his music.

Self Freedom

I was a teen in the late sixties. So many song and movies of that era lauded 'freedom.' I remember thinking even then that I had never been free. I carry the chains within me always. Some are lovingly bound around my heart such as those linking me to my family.

Teaching can be painful

A mother's love

I didn't begin appreciating my mother until I became much older. Maybe that is when I began to forgive her for not being the mother of my expectations. My love for her was full of repressed anger and resentment.

A layperson's view on potential investigation of the practice of water boarding

I have been watching the news channels and have listened to numerous talking heads debating whether or not an investigation that may possibly lead to prosecution for the practice of water boarding should be conducted. The views go all over the spectrum about this issue.

Living in Loserville

It's so freaking hot. I feel waves of heat pulse off the sidewalk to blast my face. Sweat in my hairline is running down my body to collect in soggy patches under my arms . There is no shade. This is not a section of town where large green trees wave coolly over historic homes.

Why I think it's going to be OK

Every time I watch MSNBC or CNN I have a distinct sense of déjà vu. I feel like, hey, wait a moment here. I have been through this before. I was at ground zero when the oil industry basically imploded in the 1980s.

Janice's Valentine

She hated having to sit in this room. She sat in the chaise by the bay window listening to his labored breathing. She wondered if it was time to give him his medication again. She allowed her eyes to reach the sheet covering his chest and watch it rise and fall with each breath.
